If you could only choose one album to exemplify what electronic music is in 2020, “7G” should certainly go to the desert island with you. And let’s be honest, Cook’s take on these timeless songs is not particularly what you’d expect. It just seems that when tackling anthemic classics like “Beetlebum”, “Today” or “Chandelier” you can never win. While the covers seem to get some shit online they are far from being bad or lazy. Outright bizarre stuff? Check.Ĭovers deserve an honorable mention here. Sugary soda-water-cotton-candy-bubblegum electronica? Big check.

He can really do anything, which is being showcased in full here. After all, he made a note-by-note cover of “Windowlicker”, who the fuck even does that? Cook’s dedication and meticulousness are just uncanny. But there is nothing half-baked about the music. Some of the riffs have been used in other tracks, some tracks sound more like sketches rather than finished songs and some feel like lab experiments. “7G” can be viewed as a window into Cook’s mind. “A-Z” is a high octane jungle-infused take, “Beetlebum” is a perfect mix of guitar-based indie with dirrrrrty beats, “Note Velocity” could’ve been written by a mid-20th century experimental composer and “No Yeah” is ASMR af. For the past 7 years he’s been the head of PC Music, perhaps one of the most unusual and forward-thinking electronic music labels in the world today. Releasing (or even conceiving) a project of such grandeur may seem self-indulgent, but A. Cook also covers Blur, Charli XCX, Taylor Swift, Sia, The Strokes, Smashing Pumpkins and more. Calling this album “a comprehensive guide” is no mere exaggeration: with 49 tracks divided into 7 discs, 7 tracks each (hence “7G”) this record covers A LOT of ground.Ĭonceptually, each disc is dedicated to a separate instrument: Drums, Guitar, Supersaw (sound of multiple detuned sawtooth oscillators), Piano, Nord, Spoken Word and Extreme Vocals.
